The goal of ‘Better Sleep Month’ is to encourage people to establish better sleeping patterns. After all, we can all agree that sleep is one of the most important factors when embracing a healthy lifestyle.
We know that getting 7-8 hours of sleep each night has a great list of benefits, including helping you maintain a healthy weight, feeling energized, concentrating more easily and protecting your long-term health. Many people like to talk about how they can function on little sleep, but why not brag about maintaining a healthy life by getting the proper amount of sleep?
Inadequate sleep can lead to an increase in blood pressure and stress hormone production which can lead to the body becoming stressed. These consequences of poor sleep also include mood swings, irritability, stress, and a weakened immune system.
Long term poor sleep may be linked to serious problems including narcolepsy, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, and sleep apnea.
How Much Sleep Is Needed?
Many studies and experts have revealed that anywhere between 7.5 and 8.5 hours of sleep is optimal. But, it is important to know that better sleep does not refer to just the length of time we actually sleep since better sleep is quality sleep! Some state that 6 hours of deep and uninterrupted sleep can be more beneficial than 8 hours of light and interrupted sleep.
